A serum is a delivery format, not a promise. It carries a higher share of active ingredients in a thinner base so it can sit under a moisturizer without pilling. That is genuinely useful. It is also the entire claim.
What it can do
- Put a measured dose of one or two actives where you want them.
- Layer without the heaviness of a cream.
- Make a routine shorter, because one step does the work of two.
What it cannot do
It cannot replace sunscreen, it cannot undo a week of four-hour nights, and it cannot work in three days. Brightening in particular is slow, cumulative and easy to interrupt.
When an oil is the better answer
If your skin is tight rather than dull, the problem is barrier, not pigment. An oil at the end of the routine holds the water you have just applied. It is the least glamorous step and often the one that changes things.
